Creativity, Composition, Craftsmanship for Artists

Which of the three C’s above is your forte?  Which one is not?

Comparing the level of excellence of our past to present work brings new insights.
How would I describe my evolution?  New and different or “same ol’, same ol’?

As with any other skill, focusing on excellence brings just that, but it requires careful viewing of our work, and the courage to try new methods or media.

Here are some ideas for nurturing your artistic abilities:

  • Purposely experiment with a new color palette or art style totally different from yours.  Forcing yourself to experience a new “vocabulary” can break you out of old habits and perhaps, go down a new path.

  • At art shows, walk around and focus on a specific element of the artwork, say the variety of colors or sense of composition.  This experience expands your usual sense of color and composition. Look for creative expression rather than realistic presentation.

  • Artists spend a lot of time alone, creating.  Talking about your work increases your self-knowledge and listening to other’s descriptions expands your horizons. Invite a fellow artist to your studio and ask them to bring some of their work.  Have a conversation about where each of you have been and how you feel about your work.  Exchange ideas about possible new avenues.

Create a sign with the three C’s for your studio wall. Make it easy to read and bright. Review your latest work with these in mind.
